General George Armstrong Custer (Born; 1839 New Rumley, Harrison County, Ohio - Died; June 25th 1876 at Battle of the Little Bighorn, Montana Territory) - hand-signed envelope fragment, inscribed "Genl Custer / Monroe Michigan", with affixed 3-cent stamp and New York postmark, March 30 ("30 MAR"), with copy of the certificate of authenticity from History Makers Autographs dated December 2, 2021, envelope size approx. 7.8 x 9.5 cm (approx. 4" x 3").
General Custer was an officer in the U.S. Army and a cavalry commander during the Civil War and the Native American Wars. He was present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9th 1865.
Custer and his entire regiment, including his two brothers, were decisively defeated at the Battle of Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory on June 25, 1876.
This dramatic defeat and his death made him one of the most famous and controversial figures in U.S. history, the subject of countless legends and films.
